Minneapolis man killed by police after domestic dispute

October 30, 2006

Police shot and killed a 42-year-old Minneapolis man Saturday night after he had stabbed his girlfriend and fled the scene.

The victim, who was not identified pending a Medical Examiner’s investigation, allegedly stabbed his 40-year-old girlfriend at her home on the 4500 block of Snelling Avenue in South Minneapolis. When squad cars arrived at the scene, the suspect fled in his pickup.

The woman was not seriously injured.

According to a statement released by the police department, officers chased the suspect’s vehicle north on Hiawatha Avenue until he pulled over at East 42nd Street and left the vehicle with what officers reported was a sawed-off shotgun. “Multiple officers fired multiple shots” at the suspect, the statement said, and the suspect suffered fatal wounds.

The six officers involved in the incident have been placed on paid administrative leave. The police department’s Homicide and Internal Affairs units are investigating the incident.
