$4 Million Bike Bridge Will Be Named After Sabo

August 16, 2005

The proposed Midtown Greenway bridge spanning Hiawatha Avenue would be one of the most innovative--and most expensive--bicycle and pedestrian bridges in the city.

Bicyclists and pedestrians would soar over Hiawatha on a one-foot-thick bridge deck supported by distinctive cables attached to columns, according to a presentation last week before the City Council’s Transportation and Public Works Committee. The estimated $4 million bridge would run between 28th and 26th streets and just north of the LRT bridge.

The bridge would be named for Minnesota Congressman Martin Olav Sabo, who was instrumental in securing the federal funds required for construction.
