Lowry Avenue reconstruction threatening small business

July 24, 2006

As it has done with its historic makeover of Lake Street, Hennepin County is making life difficult for small businesses on Lowry Avenue. But this time, some of those businesspeople are accusing the county of trying to put them out of business.

As G.R. Anderson reports in City Pages, the massive reconstruction project has provided few options for patrons of Lowry Avenue establishments. As tough as the reconstruction has been on Lake Street businesses, the county at least left half of that thoroughfare open while tearing up the other half. On Lowry, the entire street has been eviscerated.

“It’s the saddest, most devastating scene you could come across,” said Tait Danielson Castillo, executive director of the Hawthorne Area Community Council. Many of these businesses will be shuttered by the end of the month, he said.

Dan Michalko, a senior engineer working on the project, argued that leaving half the street open during the reconstruction would extend the time it would take to complete the work by another season or more. Hennepin County Commissioner Mark Stenglein, who represents the area, said the county was making its “best efforts” to deal with the concerns of local businesses, but added, “It’s a massive redevelopment project.”

And one that may have ulterior motives, According to the county’s report, the project presents an “opportunity” for “removal of ‘seedy’ retail.”

Without much in the way of recourse for the Lowry businesses, it looks as if the county’s plan could come to fruition fairly soon.

Listen, I'm very sorry about the good business owners that have been hurt by the Lowry Avenue closing. But those of us who live there are tired of looking at crappy buildings with criminals loitering outside. I don't consider any business owner who sells crack pipes and chore boys a good business owner. I wish they'd shut down Star Foods for good. They're praying on our neighborhood...I bet you they don't live in it!!!

Yes they left open half of Lake St. but not Chicago Ave. The “seedy retail businesses on Chicago lost 100,000s in sales. The bridge was to be rebuild at the same time, but some moron say lets wait 3 to 4 months and then rebuild it. Because of this, it cost the taxpayer $ 552,000 more and the businesses lost more.
When they did rebuild the bridge, it was behind in the timetable that the Mayor had and the city worker had to work 16 to 18 hrs a day to catch up. In doing so there was a cave-in and a city worker was almost kill, only because the Mayor wanted to have is Grand Opening of the project.

The Businesses along Lowry Ave is no doubt Businesses of color. I think you can see where I’m going with this. The city wants the businesses in Minneapolis to police the sidewalks outside their store, but don’t want the business owner to be trained in the use of a firearm. So Dear Mr. Business Owner: Please go out and do the job of the police, because I don’t have many police officers to help you. If you get shot for doing the job of the city, let me say now sorry that you are dead because I can’t lead the city of Murderapolis as your loving Mayor. Sign R.T. No Nuts.
