Police report victim of shooting threatened officers
Video footage showed Wayne Reyes, who was shot and killed by police Saturday night after a brief car chase in South Minneapolis, threatened officers with a sawed-off shotgun, according to a statement released by police Tuesday
The 42-year-old Minneapolis man was “moving about in the cab of his pickup truck” before exiting the vehicle after police pulled him over near E. 42nd St. and Hiawatha Ave. The video from one of the squad cars recorded one of the officers ordering Reyes to “show his hands,” but Reyes came out of the truck with his shotgun, and as he swung the barrel of the gun toward the officers, they opened fire.
More than 40 shots were fired and Reyes was pronounced dead on arrival at Hennepin County Medical Center. An autopsy indicated multiple gunshot wounds, two of which were considered fatal.
Earlier that evening, Reyes had stabbed his former girlfriend and another acquaintance and threatened to commit suicide, according to witnesses. The six officers involved in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave and will return to duty Thursday, Nov. 2. The videotape, from one of the squad cars, will not be made public, police officials said.
