Neal Karlen at Magers and Quinn
Neal Karlen, author of Shanda; the Making and Breaking of a Self-Loathing Jew, will appear at Magers and Quinn (3038 Hennepin
Ave. S., Minneapolis) to discuss his book. Growing up in a religious Jewish home, Neal Karlen rejected his origins, made fun of Judaism and stayed away from all things Jewish for 10 years, describing himself as a Jewish Uncle Tom. A successful journalist in New York and the Twin cities, Karlen's career failed to provide the spiritual sustenance missing in his life. A chance meeting on a flight from L.A. to Minneapolis with the Hasidic rabbi and lecturer, Manis Friedman, was the catalyst for Karlen's re-entry into Judaism and the self-awareness that led to the writing of the book Shanda. Karlen will discuss the book and his religious and spiritual life with at Magers and Quinn. The event is free and open to the public. Kosher snacks will be served.
