Fire and Ice: Extreme Adventures from the Arctic to the Equator

02/12/2006 - 14:00

Meet University of Minnesota professor Sarah Hobbie, who spends months at a time at a remote field station in one of North America’s wildest places: Alaska’s North Slope, near the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. On Feb. 12, Donald Siniff, professor emeritus, will chronicle his travels to the Antarctic, the Earth’s coldest, least hospitable continent. Siniff studies seals that live in the region’s waters and pack ice, and spent much of his time at McMurdo station and on the ship Hero, a 125-foot wooden-hulled research vessel. The series concludes on March 12 with tales from the steamier climes of Borneo, where University biologist Dawn Tanner traveled to the Danum Valley Conservation Area, a pristine lowland rainforest. Tanner is studying how to conserve Borneo’s clouded leopards. $8 each, $6/museum members. Bell Museum, 17th & University SE, Minneapolis; 612/624-7083; www.bellmuseum.org
